The best time to visit Austin, TX for kids and families

We recently took a trip to Austin, TX, one of my favorite cities! And this was our first time bringing Jimmy to Texas’s weirdest city. We had a great time, but it was so hot during our September trip! So when is the best time to visit Austin? Well, it depends on what you’re looking for.

Here is our guide on the best time to visit Austin

Spring

Springtime is arguably the best time to visit Austin. The weather is warming up, flowers are blooming, and there are tons of festivals. The main festival of spring is Austin’s South by Southwest (or SXSW), a giant festival featuring the intersection of music, film, and technology. The Austin Fine Arts Festival and Austin Food + Wine Festival also take place in the spring so if you’re hoping to make it to a festival, the spring season provides many options. However, because so much is going on, expect travel prices to be at their highest.

Pros of visiting Austin in spring:

  • Ideal weather
  • Lake and river activities
  • Beautiful scenery
  • Tons of festivals and events

Cons of visiting Austin in spring:

  • Big crowds
  • Peak hotel prices

Summer

Austin has very, very hot summers, that can get pretty humid as well. Even for locals, the temperature can become unbearable: daily highs are in the 90s and can often reach the 100s. So, unless you’re accustomed to that kind of heat, it’s best to skip a summer visit to Austin. While you can often get cheaper airfare and hotel prices if you visit during summer, you’re still going to run into a surprising number of tourists anyway. It seems the heat isn’t actually as much of a deterrent as you’d expect (or maybe travelers just aren’t expecting it to be quite so hot).

Pros of visiting Austin in summer:

  • Cheapest hotels
  • Lake and river activities

Cons of visiting Austin in summer:

  • Extreme heat
  • Fewer events
  • Big crowds

Fall

Fall is my personal favorite season to visit Austin. Although September is still very hot, October and November have great weather for a fall visit. Hotels and flights can get expensive depending on what events are happening during your visit so be sure to check it out before you plan anything. In particular, keep an eye out for Austin City Limits (ACL) which brings big crowds and expensive hotels. If you visit later in the season, you’ll get to some beautiful fall colors, great temperatures, and fun fall activities (we loved our visit to the pumpkin patch).

Pros of visiting Austin in fall:

  • Great weather
  • Lake and river activities
  • Beautiful scenery
  • Tons of festivals and events

Cons of visiting Austin in fall:

  • Big crowds
  • Peak hotel prices

Winter

Winter is a great time to visit Austin if you’re not planning to swim or visit a festival. The weather is cooler, though still mild. Snow in Austin is very rare, although if you are unlucky enough to experience poor weather during a winter visit, be prepared for the roads to become very congested. Otherwise, winter in Austin is a great time to enjoy the music, food, and beer. Plus, you can still enjoy all the lake activities too — you just don’t have the intense heat urging you to cool off.

Pros of visiting Austin in winter:

  • Cooler, but still mild weather
  • Holiday festivals and events (December only)
  • Cheaper hotels
  • Fewer tourists

Cons of visiting Austin in winter:

  • Fewer festivals and events (January and February)

No matter when you visit Austin, you’re going to have a great time in an awesome city. If you’re looking for specific kid-friendly activities, be sure to check out our post on all of our favorite things to do in Austin with kids.
