Kauai has been on my bucket list for ages! We visited Kauai after a relaxing trip to Maui so it was time to get active on the island full of adventure. First, we toured the island from the sky on an amazing helicopter tour. On our second full day, we wanted to spend some time in the water. So, we decided on a snorkel and sailing tour. We chose a tour that was perfect for the whole family to cruise the Na Pali Coast with kids!
On the half-day cruise, we saw (literally) hundreds of dolphins and sailed the entire Na Pali Coast. And it’s even more stunning in person! We swam in the ocean and searched for marine life. Then on the way home, we had a nice lunch, a couple cocktails, and relaxed a bit more before reaching shore. This was such a fun way to spend a day in Hawaii — and the captain even let me steer for a while!
Captain Andy’s Sailing Adventure
The tour company we chose was Captain Andy’s Sailing Adventure. Their reviews were fantastic and there were a bunch of tour options so we were able to pick out the one that best suited the group’s needs. I loved Captain Andy’s for a bunch of reasons, here are a few of them:
- Plenty of space — we always had lot’s of room to stretch out and the kids were able to nap during the trip.
- Great food — we chose the Snorkel Picnic Sail which had burgers and chicken sandwiches so even Jimmy was able to have a good meal despite his dietary restrictions
- Lengthy trip — The whole trip was 5.5 hours, which is a long time (I think?). When I’m spending a bunch of money on an activity, I want to know I’m getting my money’s worth.
Other than the comfortable accommodations, there were a few options to choose from for the tour. We chose what made the most sense for sailing the Na Pali Coast with kids, but here are all the options:
Snorkeling the Na Pali Coast with Kids
This was the option we chose, since we all wanted to spend some time in the water. You don’t get a ton of time snorkeling. But, since you’re swimming in the ocean with no time to rest, it’s easy to get tired. I had so much fun snorkeling, that Jimmy got a little jealous and decided to jump in. Jimmy hates the water so it was a shock to everyone. It was so cute though because he cried the whole time in the water and yet still insisted he stay put!
We didn’t end up seeing a ton of fish, but the guides said they’ll often see some turtles so make sure to keep your eyes open!
Sunset tour off the coast of Kauai
Sunset tours are great for anyone who wants a shorter trip or isn’t interested in getting in the water. They are also great for couples on a romantic trip. And of course, sunset tours will make for some beautiful photos! I’ve done these in the past and I love them for more relaxing vibes or after a day of hiking or swimming. Some options include dinner and the shorter sunset cruises don’t so make sure you know what you’re booking.
Rafting on the Na Pali Coast
Rafting tours are perfect for the most adventurous crowd. You’ll be in a small boat, meaning you’ll be right next to the water. These are perfect for getting up close to the dolphins and spending more time snorkeling than in your standard sailing cruise. The rafting tours are not for anyone looking to sit back and relax though! They also won’t work for young kids since they typically have older age limits.
